Book Review: Good Beer Guide West Coast USA (2008) – Ben McFarlan and Tom Sandham
A must have book when planning any West Coast road trip. The book starts like any good tour or beer bookby providing travel information and information on beer styles. The Good Beer Guide is organized by destination – Southern California, Northern California, Oregon, Washington, Las Vegas, Alaska, and Hawaii. For each destination they list breweries, brewpubs, beer bars, and beer and food joints to check out. Maps of each area are included. Destinations are conveniently color coded by type of destination and easily referenced with a number.
If you are not familiar with the region, the book offers hotel suggestions, information on public transportation, and classic tourist sites to check out. And even if you are familiar with the region, they provide background on beer culture in the area and providea longer historyon some of the establishments that helped to carve out an area’s beer scene.
Forbeing three years old,the information in the book for the most part is still current.A fewnotable bars and breweries have opened since publication. Plus, I worryabout operation hoursnot being current, so a good idea to always double check before driving out of your way.Still a highly relevant source for beer travelsand a great thing to keep in your glove box.
